Welcome to Wholegrain Digital! If you’re reading this, you’ve probably signed on the dotted line and turned up for your first day at work. We’re delighted that you’ve joined our team and we hope you’ll be as happy here as we are.
Over the coming days and weeks you’ll probably feel a little like a sponge, as you soak up the Wholegrain goodness and learn more about our team, our projects and how we work.
The Granary is our employee handbook, and it’s your go-to place for all things Wholegrain. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about working with us. If you can’t find what you need, please ask one of your colleagues, a.k.a. your new friends. And let us know too, because if you need to know it’s probably something we need to add to the handbook!
Who We Are
The heart of Wholegrain can be summed up by our vision, which was written by Tom and made into a beautiful video. This is how we define success…

Where We Are
Our London HQ is at Somerset House Exchange, a co-working space dedicated to supporting creative organisations with positive social and environmental impact at the heart of their mission.

Your First Day
Your first day will probably be a Thursday, as this is our ‘team day’ when we all work from the office. The rest of the time we work remotely.
Read more about working remotely.
On your first day, our People and Office manager will sit down with you over a cuppa to tell you the main things you need to know about life at Wholegrain Digital and how we work.
They will show you around Somerset House, sort out your access and introduce you to your new team. And also organise all those important things you need in order to do your job effectively, such as an email address, a profile on CharlieHR (which we use to store your employee data and documentation), and access to the various accounts and tools you’ll be using.
The will also show you this handbook and point out the information you need to read before you start. Here’s a summary of the things we think you’ll want to know, along with links so you can read up at your leisure.
Staying in Touch
Remote working is a big part of our culture here at Wholegrain. We passionately believe it makes for a happier, healthier life, and we support all our team members to take full advantage of the benefits it brings. Tom spoke about this topic at WordCamp Brighton 2016 in his talk, Happiness and the Art of Remote Working.
For remote working to be successful, it’s essential that we maintain good communication. Read here for more information on our communication policy.
Recording Hours
We ask that everybody record the hours that they work. This is for payroll and so we can keep track of the hours worked on each project for invoicing purposes.
We record our hours on Toggl
Project Management
Even if you’re not a project manager yourself, we’d like you to understand a little more about how we run and manage projects. So please take some time to chat with one of our wonderful project managers in your first few days.
Team Day
We hold at least one team building day each year, so we can get together outside of work and get to know each other a little better. We usually arrange this on a working day that suits everybody, as we’d love you all too attend, in early summer, June or July. We collectively decide where we want to go and what we want to do. The main thing is that we all get out and have fun together.
